“Sintel” is an independently produced short animation film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.

This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. The story goes that in the year 1969 (o yes...the famous 1969..what DIDN"T happen in 1969!), a 14-year-old Beatle fan..ahem..fanatic going by the name of Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronoto and, armed with a reel to reel recorder, convinced him to do an impromptu interview. 38 years later, Levitan collaborated with director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack.

As if the recordingly itself isn't remarkable enough, the animation used in this film is simply breathtaking. Listening to Lennon's straightforward and clear reason reminds us of his timeless message: a call for peace by non-violent - albeit creative - means. To each his own, says Lennon, and frees us to see the world and react to it in whichever way we feel like: as squares, as revolutionaries or as quiet peaceniks. He takes on Levitan's innocent questions with wit and humor, even kindness and compassion, as you can almost hear the curiosity in his voice bounce off the awe in Levitan's who can't quite believe he's actually getting all this gloroius wisdom down on tape.

The visuals themselves are a treat of hand drawn pen illustrations that explode into ink blots before resolving into computer aided camera trickery that takes a singular point of view, turns it on its head, zooms out of it, twists it, turns it and eventually guides you on the way to imagining the world and its contents as John himself may have seen them

Through a wordless audio-visual narrative, Hungu explores how a mother’s soul is resurrected and transformed in the form of the Hungu, an African musical instrument. This moving animated film presents the tale of a young son who must leave behind his mother as she lies dying in the barren African desert during a drought. Using the style of African rock paintings as his inspiration, Nicholas Brault has elegantly crafted this tale with a combination of 2D animation on a graphics tablet and sand animation. It is particularly impressive that Brault has created an emotionally powerful film using these visually simple images. The soundtrack is equally sparse, using only the sounds of sand and the bare, repetitive tones of the hungu to produce a hypnotic rhythm. As a result, the film feels like a meditation, a visual poem about family, memory and moving forward from experiences of death and trauma.

In addition, the DVD includes two behind-the-scenes vignettes. These are also accessible on the NFB website. Both are of good use for teachers wanting to extend the study of this film, and they provide excellent supplements to the film itself. The first vignette is a “meet the director” segment that illustrates how the animation process was implemented and addresses how decisions were made in the production and design process. In addition, a short vignette explores how the hungu has evolved into the Brazilian berimbau used in the martial art/dance capoeira originally performed by African slaves predominantly from Angola and the Congo. It documents a discussion of the history of capoeira with an articulate capoeira leader as well as a presentation of the key moves and techniques of capoeira by a group of participants, including the director.

Although younger viewers will enjoy viewing this film, I think that there is also great potential to use this film and its behind-the-scene vignettes in a secondary school setting. I highly recommend this film and its supplementary features for viewers of all ages.

Hungu won first place for the Best Animated Short Jury Award and an Honourable Mention Award for Future Film Maker at the 2008 Palm Springs International ShortFest & Short Film market. Hungu was also screened at the Toronto Film Festival.

Nicholas Brault, an award-winning short film director, produced his first films using a graphics tablet during his BA in graphic design at the University du Quebec a Montreal including L’Oeill (1999) and Vermino (2000). In 2000. he won the NFB Cineaste recherche(e) contest which allowed him to make Antagonia (2002) which screened at the Festival de Clermont-Ferrand and won an award at Portugal’s CINANIMA. He also directedIlot (2003) a film about Inuit culture that won first prize at VIDFEST, Vancouver (2004).

Who’s Hungry? is his freshman(!) film at CalArts, and it’s confident to the hilt. The film, a gory take on the tale of “Hansel and Gretel,” grabs your attention immediately and doesn’t loosen its grip until the credits appear at the end.

The animation short Zoudov was created by three students - Clement Bolla, Aurelia Vernhes and Laurent Gillot, as their final year project at the Supinfocom animation school in Arles, France.

Set during the heyday of the cold war - the paranoid 1960s’, the short film has a lot of suspense, espionage and an absolutely brilliant soundtrack. It is very similar in style to Pixar’s The Incredibles. The animation is smooth and fluid, and the production is first-rate. The ending may be a disappointment to some, but it’s perfect, when you consider the genre of the film.

This creative trio have a brilliant future ahead of them.

The test was fun to shoot- we did it fast and dirty with a cheap camcorder, and a few health and safety infringments, hanging out of the side of the car.

Using both praxinoscopes and the technique of matching up the frame rate of the spinning record to that of the camera, no computer super-imposing was used; what you see is what rolled off the camera. The transitions between each section of animation was created by simply cutting or wiping between the bits of footage.

All the animations were created, drawn and coloured by the director David Wilson.

Reply from creativedavidwilson : All the animation was created in camera. The bit with the acorn growing into a tree was created by having a series of discs with various different stages of the acorn growth on, and we would cut between them. Each disc had 16 frames on, and in order to overlap between the animations (to make it run smoothly) each new disc would progress by 8 frames. The acorn-tree bit was one of the real ball-aches of the project, but worth it.

This stop-motion video is for the song Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie. According to Lavie's Myspace:

The video was shot all stills - roughly 3225 still photos for the entire video, using one camera, hanging from the ceiling for the main body of the movie.
It took 4 weeks before shooting to create an animated computer generated storyboard for the video, with 3d dummies for the characters.

It took only 2 days of shooting for the live actors on set to re-create the 3.5 minutes computer sequence, frame by frame.

The muscle-bound Sextone complains that live actors have been masquerading as synthetics and thus robbing them of jobs (a thinly veiled reference to 'Max Headroom').

Tom and Mark (Nexus Productions) have outdone themselves with “Muffin Man,” a new spot for the recently rebranded Royal Bank of Canada. Although the spot is entirely CG, it captures the retro charm of claymation through its textures, colors and reduced frame rate.

This is one of those spots that’s pure fun to watch again and again. (It works well backwards, too.) I’m especially fond of the way it ends: increasingly baroque scenes of progress and complexity give way to the simplicity of Mr. Muffin himself, happily finishing up a business call while munching on the pastry that started it all. Brilliant.

One of the great Czech filmmakers, JAN SVANKMAJER was born in 1934 in Prague where he still lives. He trained at the Institute of Applied Arts from 1950 to 1954 and then at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts (Department of Puppetry). He soon became involved in the Theatre of Masks and the famous Black Theatre, before entering the Laterna Magika Puppet Theatre where he first encountered film. In 1970 he met his wife, the surrealist painter Eva Svankmajerova, and the late Vratislav Effenberger, the leading theoretician of the Czech Surrealist Group, which Svankmajer joined and of which he still remains a member.

Svankmajer made his first film in 1964 and for over thirty years has made some of the most memorable and unique animated films ever made, gaining a reputation as one of the world's foremost animators, and influencing filmmakers from Tim Burton to The Brothers Quay. His brilliant use of claymation reached its apotheosis with the stunning 1982 film DIMENSIONS OF DIALOGUE. In 1987 Svankmajer completed his first feature film, ALICE, a characteristically witty and subversive adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and with the ensuing feature films FAUST, CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE and his newest film LITTLE OTIK (OTESANEK) Svankmajer has moved further away from his roots in animation towards live-action filmmaking, though his vision remains as strikingly surreal and uncannily inventive as ever.

"A Tragic story with a Happy Ending!!"

This is a very interesting short film from the onset due to it unusual graphics. Instead of being live action, cartoon or CGI (which is quite the craze these days), the story is told through odd black pencil-like drawings that have an odd Gothic charm. While it's not the most colorful and exciting style I have ever seen, it deserves very high marks for being original.

As for the story, it's a bizarre fairy tale of sorts. I little girl has a very odd heart condition--it beats much faster than normal and it beats so loudly that it bothers the neighbors. After a while, she is hated by everyone and quite sad--culminating in an exciting ending that makes you wonder who you should really feel sad for in this quirky film.

Open Movies from Blender Foundation

As a follow-up to the successful project Orange’s “Elephants Dream”, the Blender Foundation initiated another open movie project. Again a small team (7) of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community have been invited to come together to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 until April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie.

Elephants Dream is a story about communication and fiction, made purposefully open-ended as the world's first 3D "Open movie". The film itself is released under the Creative Commons license, along with the entirety of the production files used to make it (roughly 7 Gigabytes of data). The software used to make the movie is the free/open source animation suite blender along with other open source software, thus allowing the movie to be remade, remixed and re-purposed with only a computer and the data on the DVD or download.

The creative concept of “Peach” was completely different as for “Orange”. This time it is “funny and furry”!

This Open movie project had as main targets:
- Developing tools in Blender for editing and rendering hair, fur or grass
- Improve character animation tools for cartoonish motion and deformation
- Test Blender with giant outdoor environments, with large grassy fields and many trees with leaves
- Further validate Blender as a professional animation creation suite

And secondary:
- Create a great and good looking animation short, licensed freely as open content
- Provide content for other artists to learn from or to re-use, including documentation and tutorials

The Blender Foundation and Blender community have been the main financiers for Peach.

Michel Gondry's latest film 'Be kind-Rewind' is now playing in most movie theatres across India.I watched it yesterday and found it as innovative and fun as his earlier films.But I also came across a short film made by him in 2001, one of his earliest short films.Its about a man's poo that starts to fillow him!Featuring himself, I think its worth a watch.

This collaborative effort was conceived with Carl Le Blond, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather Amsterdam, John Jackson, Director of Social Responsibility, MTV Networks and Suki Dusanj, Founder of The Burma Arts Board.

Every scene is full of beautiful details. From the modeling down to the grain pass, everything is coordinated to create a lush visual experience perfectly coordinated with the music. My favorite moment of choreography comes as the flowers catch the wind, visually echoing the piano’s accents as both the flowers and the music downward.

The closing type treatment is a tasteful finish. Letting choice words linger in each set was a subtle but powerful move.

This movie is launching today on all the major video sharing sites. It’s also apparently broadcasting on MTV’s HD Jumbotron on 44th street here in NYC, which is probably worth checking out if you’re in the area. Carnivàle's opening title sequence was created by A52, a visual effects and design company based in Los Angeles, and featured music composed by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman. The opening title sequence won an Emmy for "Outstanding Main Title Design" in 2004.

A52 then pitched their idea to Carnivàle executives in early 2003, who felt that the company's proposal was the most creative for the series' concept. The actual production included scanned transparencies of famous pieces of artwork, each scanned transparency being up to 300 MB in size. The resulting images were photoshopped and digitally rendered. A last step involved stock footage clips being compiled and digitally incorporated into the sequence.

The opening title sequence itself begins with a deck of Tarot cards falling into the sand, while the camera moves in and enters one card into a separate world presenting layers of artwork and footage from iconic moments of the American Depression era; the camera then moves back out of a different card and repeats the procedure several times. The sequence ends with the camera shifting from the "Judgement" Tarot card to the "Moon" and the "Sun", identifying the Devil and God respectively, until the wind blows away all cards and the underlying sand to reveal the Carnivàle title artwork.
